Preparing for the Developed Ability module (Non-Verbal section)

The Non-Verbal section within Developed Ability is the only section in the assessment that will not allow students to progress to the scored questions if they can't correctly answer the example questions. The reason for that is if they don't understand the activity, they will score 0 for the section, which will then skew their overall module results.

You can either let the students sit the assessment and then support any students who don't progress past the examples, or you can prepare all students in advance of completing the Developed Ability module.

The main thing to understand about the Non-Verbal section is that we're trying to assess a student's ability to find and replicate a pattern. They will be shown a pattern on the left, and they need to replicate the pattern in the boxes on the right, in amongst an increased number of shapes. The pattern can appear anywhere in the box on the right (i.e. it's not an identical copy of the box on the left, the pattern could be in a different position within the box).

Here is an example:

The student will have turned the circles in the left-hand box blue (by clicking on each shape individually), and will then be presented with the right-hand box, where they must locate the pattern and turn the relevant circles blue (by clicking on each individually).

Some students mistakenly think the task is to colour every shape in both boxes, so it's important to stress they are trying to find and replicate the pattern from the first box into the second box. Note, they can click a shape they've already turned blue back to white by clicking it again.
