We cap the BASE start-of-year (SOY) score at 200. In practice the cap isn’t applied to many students – a SOY student performing at this level is exceptional and performing considerably better than many students do on their BASE end-of-year (EOY) assessment.
As a reminder, the Mathematics and Literacy standardised scores are based on a nationally representative average (mean) score of 100 with a standard deviation of 15. We would expect most progress scores to stabilise between 85 and 115. Anything above 130 is well above average. Furthermore, a student scoring above 115 will be in roughly the top 6th of the populations, while one scoring below 85 will be in the bottom 6th.
